The person frowning emoji was introduced in 2010 and is a more humanlike representation of the frowning face emoji. Since 2016, it has largely been replaced by the gender specific man frowning and woman frowning emojis. Originally, most platforms showed a woman with a disappointed or upset face. On Samsung and Facebook, the eyebrows of the emoji also give it a slightly angered look. It is used to portray a range of negative emotions including those of sadness, frustration and anger. It can also be used in contrition, when offering an apology to someone or owning up to an act.
